Why is tap water dangerous for goldfish?
Tap water is heavily treated with harsh chemicals like chlorine. It might also have been treated with chloramine. This is basically a chlorine/ammonia combination used as a disinfectant to make water safe to drink, and an even more deadly combination for fish. Tap water can also contain heavy metals. By heavy metals we’re referring to toxins like cadmium, copper, lead, and zinc.
You can’t see these chemicals and the variations and quantities added to tap water to generally make it safe for human consumption are enormous, depending on where you live.
Goldfish don’t tolerate these additives which is why you need to add a water conditioner to tap water. (Mix into water well before adding your fish.) Neutralizing the chlorine is essential and taking out the other heavy metals reduces stress for your fish.
How does chlorine harm fish?
It burns the gills of goldfish, causing lasting damage and cruel distress that will eventually kill them.
What are the symptoms?
You might notice your fish swimming irrationally or trying to jump out of the water looking for oxygen because of the distress.
What are declorinators?
These water conditioners only remove chlorine. A combination of chlorine and ammonia may be present in the water. This is ‘chloramine’ and a declorinator will only remove the chlorine leaving ammonia behind.
The safest option for your tank is to use a water conditioner that’s capable of neutralizing all of the options.
When watching your fish swim in dashes through their tank or sucker down a fresh pile of food flakes, it’s easy to think of them as tough. Despite the way they can push each other about in a fight to see who can eat the most in 5 seconds, fish are actually fairly delicate pets. It’s easy to upset their health and as a fish owner if pays to remember this.
Instead of expecting fish to tolerate straight tap water, use a water conditioner to treat their aquarium water.
4 benefits of Nutrafin water conditioner
2. There’s a special herbal blend in Nutrafin Aqua Plus that’s been proven to safely relax your fish. Reducing stress makes a great difference when transporting fish, whether moving to a new house or a new tank. Even the process of having the water in their tank changed can overexcite them. A relaxed fish is always a healthier fish.
3. *Special Conditioner
This conditioner coats scales and fins to protect against injuries. There’s little more alarming than noticing a scrape on the scales of your fish or a tear in their fins, damage which can occur just from playing in the tank. Sticking a band-aid on them once something has happened is impossible, so it’s important to take steps that will prevent accidents happening.
4. It’s intended for either freshwater or saltwater tanks so whether you have a goldie or a nemo, put water conditioner on your list of must-haves.
